LELA ESTES SCHOLARSHIP

Over six years ago, Our Common Heritage established a scholarship at Sinclair Community College. The scholarship was established to assist people of Appalachian heritage to meet their educational needs and better service their family and community. The Scholarship was named after Lela Estes to recognize her continuing service to the Appalachian community and to Our Common Heritage.

The scholarship recipient receives $1000.00 for a year of classes at Sinclair. To be eligible for the scholarship a student must be of Appalachian heritage, working toward an associates degree, be a part-time or full-time student, and have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher and be financially in need of assistance. Scholarship applications are available from Sinclair’s Financial Aid and Scholarship office.

Purpose

To provide a chance for one person each year to meet their educational needs and better their place in the community.

Criteria

This is an annual non-renewable award of $1000.00. A student applying for this award must: be of Appalachian heritage; perform 8-10 hours of volunteer service for the Appalachian community within the academic year the scholarship; pursue an associate degree; financially in need of assistance (as determined by SCC Financial Aid Office); full-time or part-time (min. 6 credit hours) student; GPA of 2.5 for returning students (or high school GPA of 2.5).

Application

Applicants must: complete the standard “Sinclair Scholarship” form available at Financial Aid and Scholarship, building 10-343; provide an additional written statement of information about their Appalachian heritage; be available for personal interview with the selection committee in early June.

Selection

A selection committee for Our Common Heritage will select the annual recipient from among the five (5) finalists.
